]FOLDED MEMORY OF WHISPERING LESO
An immersive exploration of pregnancy, motherhood, and resilience in Tanzania
Discover Folded Memory of Whispering Leso, a powerful exhibition by Tanzanian metal sculptor, painter, and textile artist Safina Kimbokota.
Rooted in doctoral research and developed through collaborative workshops with pregnant women and mothers from health centres across Dar es Salaam, the exhibition sheds light on the often-unseen realities of pregnancy, labour, and motherhood. Through sculpture, textiles, immersive installations, and a co-created woven tapestry, Kimbokota shares stories of fear, exhaustion, grief, resilience, and care.
By bringing together stitched and spoken narratives from mothers themselves, the exhibition invites audiences to reflect on maternal experiences that are too often overlooked. Transforming statistics into personal stories, Folded Memory of Whispering Leso is both a tribute to Tanzanian mothers and a call for greater empathy, visibility, and understanding.
