Bio:
GITAFRIKA BAND is a captivating musical ensemble, led by the talented guitarist and singer, James Mlanda, hailing from the picturesque village of Mbesa in Tunduru District, Ruvuma Region, Tanzania. Born into the renowned Ngoni tribe, James was deeply influenced by his father’s musical legacy, which instilled in him a passion for preserving his cultural heritage through music.

In 2014, James Mlanda brought together like-minded musicians to form GITAFRIKA BAND, a name derived from the Swahili words “gita” and “frika” (meaning “sweet and fun Africa”), reflecting the essence of their performances – a sweet and fun-filled celebration of African culture. The band’s signature sound weaves together East African music, Afro-pop, and acoustic melodies, bridging the gap between tradition and contemporary music.

As cultural ambassadors of Tanzania’s musical heritage, GITAFRIKA BAND’s performances have garnered widespread acclaim at esteemed venues, including the Bagamoyo Festival, Poapoa Restaurant, Jamafest 2017 in Kampala, Uganda, Nafasi Artspace, The Beat Festival, and numerous official events.
