MUVI KALI #141
Central African Stories of Resilience
This edition of MUVI KALI brings together two powerful documentaries from the Central African Republic, offering intimate portraits of resilience, solidarity, and everyday life.
In “Makongo” by Elvis Sabin Ngaïbino, we follow Albert and André, two young Aka Pygmies from Mongoumba. Once mocked at school, they now fight illiteracy in their community, dreaming of creating a mobile school for children. Faced with a lack of funding, they choose to sell makongo—highly valued edible caterpillars—at the market. Their journey deep into the forest reveals local food culture, informal trade, and quiet determination.
“Chambre n°1” (Room No. 1) by Leila Thiam takes us inside the Trauma Department of Bangui Community Hospital. In Room No. 1, ten women wait to be discharged and return home. As they wait, conversations unfold—fears, hopes, plans, laughter, and moments of strength—offering an intimate glimpse into resilience and contemporary life in Bangui.
Together, these films shed light on human dignity, collective strength, and the courage found in everyday struggles.
