YOU WERE MY CUP OF TEA EXHIBITION BY JAN VAN ESCH

Jan van Esch is a Dutch multimedia artist based in Amsterdam. His practice combines video, performance, drawing, and socially engaged art. He explores power relations, systems of exchange, and global inequalities by transforming discarded materials into carriers of new meaning.

PART I
Meters of tangled textiles drift across the Indian Ocean before washing ashore. Using mitumba fabrics and scavenged clothes from Amsterdam and Dar es Salaam, the video installation reflects on waste, beauty, identity, and power.
The work evokes a contemporary Tower of Babel, where textiles loaded with foreign languages and corporate logos speak to the marketplace rather than to one another.

Created during the Rangi Nyumbani Residency, an initiative by Alliance Française and Rangi Gallery.
